Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Moorer's Strong Night Helps No. 11 Express Women's Basketball Surge Past BMCC for Region 15 Victory

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 11 Monroe College – Bronx women's basketball team defeated Borough of Manhattan Community College, by a score of 79-60, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium on Thursday, November 16. Thanks to the regional victory, the Express now bump their Region 15 record to 2-0 and are now 2-2 overall.

After only leading by one after the first half, the Express busted the game open by outscoring the Panthers (1-3, 1-3 Region 15), 49-31, during the final 20 minutes of the contest.

Leading the way for Monroe – Bronx was freshman guard Tymere Moorer who tallied a triple-double with 10 points, a game-high 12 steals, and 11 rebounds coming off the bench. She also blocked four shots.

"Tymere has been a symbol of consistency since we began practicing," Monroe College – Bronx Head Coach Damel Ling said. "Her energy and her effort on the defensive end of the floor really got us going tonight."

Freshman guard Daysiah Smith scored a game-high 32 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, forced six steals, and dished out three assists for the Express. Smith set a program single-game record with 14 made free throws (14-for-21). The previous team record was 10 free throws made by Frances Morales who drained 10 free throws in a game twice during the 2017-18 season.

Rookie guard Angeleny Cobos netted 17 points and collected a duo of steals off the bench for the Express. Sophomore guard Kuari Green had a productive game with nine points, four rebounds, just as many assists, and four steals.

Monroe – Bronx got off to a sluggish start as they fell behind, 21-20, with 4:49 left to play in the opening half. The Express were able to get back on track as a free throw each from sophomore forward Kristina Poitier-Wells and Smith propelled the Blue and Gold to a 22-21 advantage. After each team traded buckets, Smith converted a layup to extend Monroe's lead to 26-23 with 3:02 remaining in the half.

The two teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the stanza, as BMCC concluded the scoring in the period with a layup by sophomore guard Emily Kennedy to shrink Monroe's benefit to 30-29 with 10 ticks left on the clock. That would be the score after 20 minutes of play.

The Express came storming out of the gate to start the second half, scoring the first eight points to skyrocket to a 38-29 hold just 2:54 into the third quarter. Green's traditional three-point play was the highlight of the Express' early third-quarter blitz.

BMCC could not recover as Monroe built its lead to 57-44 after 30 minutes of action. The Express padded their lead during the majority of the fourth quarter as a layup courtesy of Moorer equaled Monroe's largest lead of the evening at 71-49 with 4:38 remaining in regulation time. The Express went on to win their Region 15 contest by a score of 79-60.

"It was a good night," Ling said. "It's always good to get a region win."

For the Express, Poitier-Wells finished with four points, six rebounds, three assists, and just as many steals. Rookie forward Arlene Corona snatched five rebounds and gathered three steals. Freshman guard Davian Myers generated four points, just as many boards, and a pair of steals. Classmate Leanna Morales scored three points, grabbed four boards, and forced two steals. First-year guard Ashley Cloud clutched two caroms, while freshman guard Jah Gunter added a rebound of her own.

Monroe – Bronx will head to Maryland for the weekend. On Saturday, November 18, the Express will take on NJCAA Division II's Montgomery College – Rockville, at Montgomery College Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
