BRONX, NY – Monroe College-Bronx men's soccer made their home debut Thursday afternoon with a 1-0 victory against the Borough of Manhattan Community College Panthers (0-1, 0-1 Region XV) at Alan Skidelsky Field in New Rochelle, NY. This is the Express' second consecutive shutout to increase their win-streak to two.
The Express went on the attack early at the 2:13 mark with a shot that was wide left by second year left wing back Kymron Ashley. Tom Hendrickson attempted to push a shot down the middle, but it was turned back by Ademola Opensanwo. Monroe continued their timely offense with the lone goal of the contest going straight down the middle by Denis Schmidt. BMCC was stifled on defense as their offense was stagnant for most of the contest, unable to get any clean looks in the first half. Alessio Pirello recovered four Panther shots on goal in the first half alone to keep BMCC behind.
The Panther's best chance to knot up the match was at the 53:39 mark as a penalty kick by Carlos Auquilla was saved by Pirrello to raise his total to five. Tiago Aspecada tried to put the game out of reach with a late shot attempt but was thwarted by BMCC goalie Abdul Mumin Seidu. The match went down to the final second with the Express escaping with the 1-0 win.
Denis Schmidt led the contest with four shots, two shots on goal and the lone goal on the afternoon. Monroe had a total of 19 shots and 7 saves, while BMCC had 9 shots and six saves.
The Express return to action on Monday (Sept. 12) against Mercer County Community College in West Windsor Township, New Jersey at 4:00 PM.
