NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Monroe College-Bronx women's volleyball returned home Tuesday evening for a conference tilt against the Fashion Institute of Technology Tigers (2-9, 2-4 Region 15), resulting in a three set victory, (25-13, 25-23, 25-13). With the victory, Monroe-Bronx sweeps the season series against FIT.
The Express set the tone early, scoring seven early points to push the lead by five, where the Rodriguez sisters recorded four of the team's first nine kills. Following a
Lesly Almonte spike, the Express would extend their lead to eight points, and then proceeded to score the next eight of the set's last ten points to close out the period. The Tigers opened the second set posting their largest lead of the match to four before a seven point flurry to push the home team's lead to 14-10.
Lisanel Rodriguez registered the last two of her 13 kills to push Monroe to the finish line.
In the end, the Express controlled the offense totaling 57 points, 32 kills on 88 swings, 57 digs, 28 assists and 25 aces.
Lisanel Rodriguez continued her fiery, offensive season with 17 points, 15 kills and six digs.
Soumayatou Yaogo allotted eight points, eight kills and one dig.
Madison Nguyen anchored the Tigers with her 14 point, 13 kill, five dig performance to try to keep FIT in reach during the second set.
The Express continue their home stand Thursday (Sept. 29) for a non-conference matchup against Medgar Evers College (1-9) at 7:00 PM inside the Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, NY.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
