NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Monroe College-Bronx men's soccer (3-2-1, 3-0 Region 15) shut out Region 15 and hometown rival Bronx Community College (2-1, 1-1 Region 15) in a conference victory of 8-0. This contest pushes the Express' win-streak against the Broncos to five, stemming all the way from the 2017 season.
The red hot Express controlled the game early on with multiple shots inside the box, but were turned around by BCC goalie Ricardo Perez, who had 14 saves during the match-up. At the 17:17 mark, Lucas Van Pelt had the opportunity to stick a penalty kick but was turned away by Perez. Monroe broke the scoring ice with a header from Federico Sandoval off an
Asier Garcia corner kick. With 90 seconds left in the first half Josh Kenig slotted in a goal off a pass from
Alejandro Preud'homme-Cerda. The Express would end the first half with 19 shots.
Leading two goals to none, the Express continued their inspiring play with a
Zion Julien score at the 52:40 mark, which was one of his three on the afternoon. Shortly after, Sandoval kicked in his second score pushing the lead four goals to zero. Monroe-Bronx's
Marc Peris and
Ignacio Errejon joined in on the scoring action with one goal a piece. Julien capped off his career game with a goal at the 68:57 mark and with 10 seconds left in the contest, to finish off the hat trick.
In the end, Monroe registered more shots (48 to 3), including 29 in the second half, shots on goal (25-2) and corner kicks (10-1).Â
The Express (3-2-1, 3-0 Region 15) travel to Selden, NY Thursday (Sept. 20) to take on Region 15 opponent Suffolk County Community College (3-1, 0-0 Region 15).Â
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
