Offense Continues to Heat up as Monroe Express Baseball Picks up Run-Rule Win over Bronx

BRONX, N.Y., April 8, 2022 – The Monroe College Express baseball team's offense stayed hot on Friday, as the Express rolled to a 12-1 run-rule victory in five innings over Region 15 foe Bronx Community College at Ohio Field. The Express improve to 8-13 overall and 4-5 in Region 15 play with the win, while the Broncos fall to 4-6 overall and in region games.

The Express jumped out to another early lead on Friday, just as they did in Tuesday's matchup with the Broncos. Jose Arrieta led off the game with a single to left, and then stole both second and third. With two outs, Ernie Farrell singled him in to make it a 1-0 game.

Monroe got things going again in the second with Ruben Ogando, Alex Rodriguez and Randy Diaz hitting three straight singles to load the bases to open the inning. Ramsel Jerez then drew a walk, plating Ogando to make it a 2-0 score. With two outs, Salomon Lluveres drew another walk, bringing Rodriguez home to leave the Express ahead, 3-0.

The Broncos put a run on the board in the bottom of the third to get back within two runs, but the Express rallied right back in the fourth. With Juan Jorge and Lluveres on base after a double and a walk, respectively, Farrell blasted a three-run homer to right, pushing Monroe's lead to 6-1. The Express loaded the bases with two outs later in the frame, allowing a run to then come in when Jerez was hit by a pitch, making it a 7-1 ballgame. Arrieta drew a walk to plate another run for a seven-run lead, and then Jorge hit his second double of the inning, scoring two more runs to leave the Express on top, 10-1.

Farrell continued his big day with a single to lead off the fifth. Joseph Rosario then ripped a triple to center to score Farrell, and then an error by the shortstop allowed Rosario to come home and put Monroe up, 12-1, eventually forcing a run-rule finish after five frames.

Anderson Cuello earned the win with three scoreless innings in relief, improving to 3-0 on the season. He allowed just two hits while striking out three. Victor Vilomar got the start and allowed one run on no hits with a pair of strikeouts in two frames. Alexander Lora took the loss for Bronx to fall to 1-2.

Farrell finished 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored in the win. Jorge hit 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run. Arrieta wetn 1-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a pair of stolen bases. Ogando went 2-for-4 with two runs, a stolen base and a triple. Rosario scored a run and knocked in another in a 1-for-3 effort that included a triple. Alex Rodriguez scored twice in a 1-for-3 outing. Diaz hit 1-for-2 with a run. Jerez went 0-for-1, but knocked in two runs and scored once himself.

The Express and Broncos go head-to-head twice more on Saturday, April 9, with the Express as the hosts this time around at Roberto Clemente State Park. Game 1 is set for 12 p.m.
