Express Softball Erupts For Seven Runs In Fifth Rolling To A 11-6 Home Victory Over Middlesex County College

New Rochelle, N.Y., March 26, 2022 – The Monroe Express softball team went off in the bottom of the fifth, batting around the order for seven runs to roll past Middlesex County College, 11-6 on Saturday afternoon at Flowers Park. The win improves the Express's record to 11-4 while the Blue Colts fall to 4-1 with the loss.
 
The Express struck right away in the bottom of the first as Cinthia Ramirez (Brooklyn, New York) belted a two-run single to right field to make it 2-0, then Middlesex County College responded with three runs in the top of the second to take the lead 3-2. Chloe Oblepias led off with a single and stole second, then Hannah Cotayo ripped an RBI double to left field to cut the lead to 2-1. Abigail Jason singled right after to left field, stole second, and brought in a two-run single by Jennah Schiraldo to give the Blue Colts the lead.
 
Juliana Vasquez (Queens, New York) put the Express back in front 4-3 with a frozen rope to center field, scoring Ramirez and Arlenny Diaz (New York, New York) before Middlesex County College roared back with three straight runs to retake the lead to 5-4. Jason and Schiraldo recorded back-to-back singles, then Olivia Tirso uncorked a two-run double to left field, and Kaitlynne McCarthy deployed an RBI single to the right field to bring Tirso home.
 
Monroe-Bronx exploded for seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth to take control of the game. The Express batted around in the inning as Diaz began, reaching first on an error, then moving on to second on a wild pitch. Paola Calderon (Brooklyn, New York) drilled an RBI single to left field to tie it up at five, then Nicole Peralta (New York, New York) provided the knock out blow two batters later, cranking a three-run shot to right field to put the Express back in front by three, 8-5. The Express extended their lead to 9-5 as Ashley Ulmschneider (Queens, New York) scored when Genesis Duarte-Suarez (Queens, New York) reached first base on an error, and Diaz connected on a two-run single to move the margin to 11-5. Layla Ramos (Queens, New York) retired six straight to seal the 11-6 victory.
 
The Express collected 13 hits on the afternoon, with four players recording multi-hit games led by Diaz's team-high three while Ramirez, Vasquez, and Ulmschneider had two apiece. Peralta drove in a team-high three runs on a home run in the bottom of the fifth while DiazRamirez, and Vasquez all drove in two each. 
 
Ramos picked up her fifth victory on the season, going five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, walking three, and striking out a batter. Mia Colamarino (Bronx, New York) got the start for the Express, going two innings and allowing three runs on five hits with a walk.
 
McCarthy went the distance, allowing nine runs on 13 hits, striking out three batters, and walking two.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 36 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports program, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
