Sizzling Bats Ignite Express Softball To Sweep Over Union County College

The Express produced 27 runs on 22 hits during Sunday's doubleheader sweep of Union County College.

New Rochelle, N.Y., March 27, 2022 – The Monroe Express softball team kept their red hot hitting going on Sunday afternoon, posting 27 runs on 22 hits for a two-game sweep of Union County College 12-0 in Game 1 and 15-7 in Game 2 on Sunday afternoon at Flowers Park in New Rochelle, New York. The Express's third straight win improves their record to 13-4, and the Owls fall to 0-6 with the loss.

Game 1: Monroe Express 12, UCC 0
The Express offense raced out of the station on the first pitch as Zahra Medina (Bronx, New York) clocked an inside the park Home Run to take a 1-0 lead. Then two batters later, Arlenny Diaz (New York, New York) ripped an RBI single to center field to extend the lead to 2-0 before Cinthia Ramirez (Brooklyn, New York) uncorked a double to center and was brought across on a Juliana Vasquez (Queens, New York) RBI groundout making it 3-0 after the first inning. Monroe-Bronx added five runs in the bottom of the third and four runs in the bottom of the fourth to expand the advantage to 12-0. Ashley Ulmschneider (Queens, New York) started the offensive onslaught in the bottom of the third when she unloaded a two-run triple to center to stretch the advantage to 5-0. Raileni Amarante (New York, New York) connected on a two-run homer, and Ashleigh Stewart (Brooklyn, New York) scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-0 going into the fourth inning. Ramirez kept the Express bats humming in the bottom of the fourth, ripping an RBI single through the left side before Ulmschneider added to her team-high four RBIs on the season with a two-run double to make it 11-0 and then came across the final Express run for the 12-0 victory.
 
The Express recorded 11 hits as Ulmschneider, Medina, and Ramirez all registered multi-hit games with two hits apiece. Monroe-Bronx was perfect in the field, not committing a single error in the field, with Amarante leading the way with nine putouts.
 
Toni Shawnee (Tulsa, Oklahoma) notched his fourth victory of the season, going fourth innings with eight strikeouts and allowing just two hits and no walks.
 
Madison Cieslinski took the loss for Union County College as she allowed 12 runs on 11 hits over four innings with a strikeout.

Game 2: Monroe Express 15, UCC 7
Union County College got off to a quick start in Game 2, scoring three runs in the top of the first as Madison Cieslinski recorded an RBI on a groundout to the pitcher before Emma Cieslinski unloaded an RBI triple to left field and scored on an error to third to lead 3-0. The Express would respond right away in the bottom of the first when Zahra Medina (Bronx, New York) scored on a wild pitch, and Cinthia Ramirez (Brooklyn, New York) grabbed an RBI on a groundout to the shortstop. Nicole Peralta (New York, New York) nailed a two-run double to center field to move the Express in front 4-3 in the bottom of the second, and then the Owls retook the lead 5-4 when Analise Garcia scored on a wild pitch and Cieslinski grounded out to the pitcher to pick up an RBI.
 
Monroe-Bronx grabbed the lead again in the bottom of the third with three runs when Genesis Duarte-Suarez (Queens, New York) connected on a two-run single, and Raileni Amarante (New York, New York) scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-5. Union County College didn't go away, registering two runs in the top of the fourth to tie it at seven on an Alexis Cieslinski double to left field that scored two. Monroe-Bronx exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away en route to a 15-7 victory.
 
Ramirez scored on a wild pitch to go ahead 8-7 on a wild pitch with the bases loaded, then Arlenny Diaz (New York, New York) grounded out to the third base and picked up an RBI to make it 9-7, scoring Layla Ramos (Queens, New York). Amarante connected for a two-run single to increase the margin to 11-7. Peralta broke the game open with a three-run triple to clear the bases on her second pitch at-bat to make it 14-7 before Juliana Vasquez (Queens, New York) scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to help the Express claim the victory in five innings.
 
Toni Shawnee (Tulsa, Oklahoma) picked up her second straight victory on the day and sixth of the season, coming in with the game tied at 7 to toss a scoreless one and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts and no walks while allowing just two hits. Ramos got the start allowing seven runs on four hits and striking out four.
 
Cielinski took the loss for Union County College going three innings, allowing 11 runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
 
The Express will look to extend their winning streak to four this weekend, Sunday, April 3, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on the road against #5 Rowan College Of Gloucester County in Sewell, New Jersey. For more information, please visit the Monroe Express Softball Schedule Page.
