Monroe Express Softball Extends Winning Streak To A Program-Record Seven Games Sweeping Monroe Mustangs In The First Intercampus Showdown Of The Season

New Rochelle, N.Y., March 18, 2022 – The Monroe Express Softball team's bats hummed again on Friday afternoon, powering them to their third straight series sweep over the Monroe Mustangs 13-4 in Game 1 and 12-4 in Game 2 in an intercampus showdown between the two schools at Flowers Park. The Express's program-record seventh consecutive victory improved their record to 8-2 while the Mustangs fell to 1-12.
 
Game 1: Monroe Express 13, Monroe College 4
The Mustangs got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first when Leilona Pina ripped a two-run triple to make it 2-0. The Express rang up six consecutive runs in the top of the second and third to go in front for good. Monroe-Bronx got on the board in the top of the second with two outs, as Juliana Vasquez (Queens, New York) reached first on an error by the third baseman and advanced to second and got to third on a passed ball. Layla Ramos (Queens, New York) wasted no time belting an RBI Single to center field to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Express put up four runs in the top of the third to go up 5-2. Genesis Duarte-Suarez (Queens, New York) connected on the double down the left-field line, and Arlenny Diaz (New York, New York) singled up the middle and advanced on a throw to second. Cinthia Ramirez (Brooklyn, New York) stepped into the batter's box and cracked an RBI single, and then Vasquez broke the game open with an inside-the-park home run bringing Ramirez and Diaz home. Monroe-Bronx added to their lead in the top of the fourth on a Diaz RBI single to center field before the Mustangs with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a Mya Jack bunt single RBI scoring Genelly Cruz. The Express added five more in the top of the fifth, beginning with Ashleigh Stewart (Brooklyn, New York) reaching first on an error and advancing to third on a throwing error while Nicole Peralta (New York, New York), Ramos, and Vasquez all scored three unearned runs. Zahra Medina (Bronx, New York) ripped an RBI double down the left-field line to score Stewart and came across home plate on a Duarte-Suarez RBI on a sacrifice bunt. Peralta posted an RBI single, and Vasquez scored one more run in the top of the sixth, leading the Express to a 13-4 Game 1 victory.
 
In the first game, Vasquez led the Express with three RBIs teamed up with Diaz, Ramirez, and Peralta to post a multi-hit game with each recording two apiece.
 
Ramos got the start and picked up her third victory of the season, going 5.2 innings allowing nine hits, four runs, four earned runs, three walks, and a strikeout.
 
Angelina Perez took the loss for the Mustangs after tossing five innings and allowing 11 runs and six earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out three.

Game 2: Monroe Express 12, Monroe College 4
The Express and Mustangs switched sides in Game 2, and the visitors got on the board first in the top of the first on a Thanysha Gil RBI Single to right field. The Express grabbed the lead for the first time in the game with three in the bottom of the second on a Genesis Duarte-Suarez (Queens, New York) two-run single and an Arlenny Diaz (New York, New York) RBI single down the left-field line leading 3-1 after two. The Mustangs tied it up at three in the top of third, grabbing two runs on a Camryn Brooks sacrifice fly RBI and a Miralba Sandez RBI through the right side of the infield. The Express went back in front 5-3 in the bottom of the third on a two-run double by Nicole Peralta (New York, New York) and then added two more in the bottom of the fourth as Zahra Medina (Bronx, New York) scored on a wild pitch, and Diaz got an RBI on a groundout to second to make it 7-3. The Express poured it on during the bottom of the fifth as Duarte-Suarez recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice, then Diaz cranked an RBI single to the right side. Paola Calderon (Brooklyn, New York) was walked in, scoring Medina and Duarte-Suarez came across the plate on an unearned run to make it 11-3. The Express added one more in the bottom of the sixth when Medina scored on a fielding error for a 12-4 win and another series sweep. 
 
The Express had three players record multi-RBI games, with Duarte-Suarez and Diaz driving in a team-high tied three runs apiece while Peralta had two RBIs. Four players had multi-hit games with a team-best three from Medina and Cinthia Ramirez (Brooklyn, New York), while Duarte-Suarez and Diaz had two each.
 
Toni Shawnee (Tulsa, Oklahoma) went the distance pitching six innings, striking out nine batters while allowing nine hits, four runs, and three earned runs.
 
Hilda Sanchez took the loss for the Mustangs allowing nine hits, seven runs, six unearned runs, and walked one.

The Express look to build on their program-record seven-game winning streak and sweep another doubleheader on Sunday, March 20, against the Community College of Rhode Island at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at Frozen Ropes in Chester, New York.
