THE WIN STREAK HITS NINE! Express Softball Explodes For 30 Runs In Doubleheader Sweep Of CCRI

New Rochelle, N.Y., March 20, 2022 – The Monroe Express softball team exploded for 30 runs in two wins over Community College of Rhode Island 19-11 in Game 1 and 11-3 in Game 2 in a Sunday doubleheader at Frozen Ropes in Chester, New York. The Express continued their record-setting start extending their winning streak to a program-best nine victories improving to 10-2 while the Knights fell to 7-10-1.
 
Monroe-Bronx rang up 19 runs in their game one victory, the second-most in a single-game, falling two runs short of the single-season mark of 21 runs set in a 21-7 win over Nassau Community College on April 16, 2019. They followed up that performance with an 11-3 win in Game 2.
 
Game 1: Monroe Express 19, CCRI 10
Both teams combined for 12 runs through the first three innings. CCRI got on the board first as Samantha Marsella cracked a two-run double in the top of the first to make it 2-0 and Hanna Dias added an RBI single in the second to make it 3-0, and Jillian Sierra belted a three-run jack to extend the Knight advantage 6-0. The Express rallied with six straight runs as Paola Calderon (Brooklyn, New York), and Ashleigh Stewart (Brooklyn, New York) connected on two-run homers in the bottom of the second. Calderon added an RBI triple, and Layla Ramos (Queens, New York) added an RBI single to tie it at six after three innings. CCRI exploded for four runs in the top of the fourth as Jillian Serra started things with a sacrifice fly to put them back in front 7-6, then Ashley Torres cranked a three-run homer to extend the lead to 10-6 going into the bottom of the third. The Express went off in the bottom of the fourth, dropping 14 runs as Cinthia Ramirez (Brooklyn, New York) and Calderon recorded RBIs on a single and a walk before Ramos smacked a two-run single to tie it at 10. Nicole Peralta (New York, New York) doubled, and Calderon scored the go-ahead run on a center field throwing error 11-10. The Express poured it on down the stretch as Stewart posted a two-run double, then scored on an error with Zahra Medina (Bronx, New York) before Juliana Vasquez (Queens, New York) registered a two-run double. Calderon's two-run jack built the Express lead to 19-10 for a decisive victory.
 
Mia Colamarino (Bronx, New York) got the victory going four innings and allowing 10 runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out two more.
 
Sierra took the loss going 3.2 innings and allowing 19 runs on 17 hits while walking two and striking out one.
 
Game 2: Monroe Express 11, CCRI 3
CCRI came out firing again in Game 2 with the first three runs in the top of the first. Ashley Torres uncorked a two-run double to center field, and Sam Marsella added an RBI single to make it 3-0. The Express responded immediately with a six-run first inning as Genesis Duarte-Suarez (Queens, New York) and Cinthia Ramirez (Brooklyn, New York) connected on an RBI single. Paola Calderon (Brooklyn, New York) was walked in for the tying run to make it three-all. Layla Ramos (Queens, New York) put the Express in front for good right after sizzling an RBI single into center field. After a Nicole Peralta (New York, New York) sacrifice fly, Ashleigh Stewart (Brooklyn, New York) extended the lead to 6-3 with an RBI single of her own. Stewart would provide an RBI double in the bottom of the third to increase the margin to 7-3 before Zahra Medina (Bronx, New York) picked up an RBI on a groundout to the shortstop to make it 8-3. Juliana Vasquez (Queens, New York) delivered the knockout blow in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run dinger to give Monroe-Bronx an 11-3 five-inning victory.
 
Ramos got the victory going five innings, allowing eight hits, three runs with two walks, and two strikeouts.
 
Sam Marsella took the loss going 4.1 innings, allowing 11 runs on 16 hits with four walks.
 
The Express look to build their program-record winning streak to double digits on Tuesday, March 22, on the road in a doubleheader matchup against Middlesex County College at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. For more information, please visit the Monroe Express Softball Schedule Page.


ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 36 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and
