Monroe Express Softball Splits Doubleheader With Southeastern Community College; Express Explode For Eight First Inning Runs In A 10-8 Victory In Game 2

Whiteville, NC, March 9, 2022 - The Monroe Express Softball team split their second doubleheader on their Spring Trip to North Carolina on the road against Southeastern Community College by the scores of 4-2 in Game 1 and 10-8 in Game 2.

Game 1 Highlights: Southeastern Community College 4, Monroe Express 2
  • Sophomore Toni Shawnee (Tulsa, Oklahoma) got the nod on a day's rest taking the loss. Shawnee allowed six hits and four runs over five innings, striking out one and walking one.
  • Paola Calderon (Brooklyn, New York) produced the Express's only hit going 1-for-3 at the plate.
  • Monroe Bronx was excellent in the field not committing a single error led by four putouts by Calderon and the Express also turned four double plays in the game.
Game 2 Highlights: Monroe Express 10, Southeastern Community College 8
  • Layla Ramos (Queens, New York) started the game for the Express going two innings allowing three hits and four runs while striking out one.
  • Mia Colamarino (Bronx, New York) picked up the victory for Monroe-Bronx allowing five hits and four runs over five innings.
  • Paola Calderon (Brooklyn, New York) and Zahra Medina (Bronx, New York) both recorded multi hit games and Nicole Peralta (New York, New York) led the way with three RBIS as four Express hitters recorded multi-RBI games with Calderon, Medina, Ramos, and Cinthia Ramirez (Brooklyn, New York) all posting two.
  • The Express collected 11 hits on the day and scored eight first inning runs batting around in the inning.
The Express will look to go over .500 mark on Friday, March 11, in their third doubleheader against Fayetteville Technical Community College, with Game 1 beginning at 1 p.m. and Game 2 at 3 p.m. For more information, please visit the Monroe Express Softball Schedule Page.


ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 36 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports program, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 17 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
