New Rochelle, NY, February 23, 2022 – Holding the #2-seed for the first time in program history, the Monroe Express men's basketball team put on a show for a raucous home crowd on hand using a thunderous 15-0 second-half run to pull away from #7-seed Bronx Community College in a decisive 77-46 victory on Tuesday night in the Region 15 Quarterfinals at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Monroe-Bronx notched their second postseason victory in school history and gave the program their first-ever 20 win season, improving to 20-9 overall. Bronx Community College falls to 6-17 to end their season.
The Express advance to the Region 15 Semifinals this weekend for the first time since the 2018-19 season and will face #3 seed Nassau Community College next.
Three of the Express's five starters scored in double figures on the night, with Sophomore
Isaiah Stone (Baldwin, New York) leading the way with his team-leading 16th double-double dropping a game-high 21 points, 14 coming in the first half, while also hauling down a team-high 13 rebounds. Freshmen
Jasigha Barnes (Baldwin, New York) and
Siddiq McNair (Philadelphia, Pennslyvania) scored 15 points and 13 points while
McNair dished out a career-high eight assists and
Barnes handed out four.
Stone swatted away a game-best two shots, while
Barnes and sophomore
Jaiden Simon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tied for a team-best with two steals each.
The Express made it a difficult shooting night for Bronx Community College, holding them to 26.9% shooting from the field (18-for-67) and 13.6% from three-point range (3-for-22). Monroe-Bronx also shot 45.3% from the field (29-for-64) while outrebounding the Broncos 45-37 and outscoring them in the paint 40-22. The Express also got excellent scoring contributions from their bench with 30 points.
Bronx Community College recorded five of the first eight points of the contest before the Express went on a 9-0 run to stretch their lead to seven, 12-5 at 15:01 on a
McNair layup. The Broncos responded with an 11-4 run of their own to knot the game up at 16 at 10:43 on a Christopher Mills jumper before Monroe Bronx went on a 12-2 run to get the lead to double-digits, 28-18 at 7:00 on an
Onterio Miller (Bronx, New York) layup. Then the Express stretched its lead to 16, with seven seconds remaining on a
Barnes layup to make it 42-26 going into halftime.
Monroe-Bronx came out in the first three and a half minutes of the second half hellbent on putting the game away, achieving that objective with a 15-0 run and holding the Bronx C.C. scoreless, increasing their halftime lead to 33, 57-26 at 16:29 on a
Babacar Niang (Harlem, New York) layup. The Express would build its lead its largest night, 34, 70-36 at 7:00 on a
Niang layin and cruise the rest of the way to a 77-46 win.
Enmanuel Garcia led the offensive and defensive attack for Bronx Community College, putting up a double-double hauling down a game-high 16 rebounds, and registering a team-high 12 points. Malik Dale contributed 10 points while snatching a team-best two steals and tying for another in assists with Ramon Santos IV and Blaise Atanga with two each.
The No. 2 seeded Monroe Express moves on to the weekend as the host of the Region 15 Championship for the first time in program history.
