BRONX. NY – After a stunning loss at home Saturday, Monroe Express men's basketball headed to their backyard hometown rival, Bronx Community College resulting in a 105-57 bounce back victory Tuesday evening inside Alumni Gym. Six Express players registered 10 or more points in the contest, which is a season high. In addition, the blue and gold eclipse the century mark for the first time this season. Monroe's record increases to 8-5 (5-2 Region 15), and BCC falls to 0-12 (0-5 Region 15).
Anthony Bannister put the Express in scoring position early, cleaning up his own miss only ten seconds into the contest to give Monroe an early lead. Gary Herbert answered shortly after with a mid-range jumper off his own offensive rebound to knot the game up. Two minutes later, Bannister cleaned up an
Andrew Molina shot off the offensive glass, and this was the catalyst for the impending 20-2 Express run over the next four minutes of action to balloon the lead to 24-4. The Broncos attempted to chip away at the lead, cutting the deficit to 14 points off a Taijay Good 3-pointer, but that was the closest BCC would be for the remainder of the contest. At the 7:42 mark,
Babacar Niang went on a six point run that featured a steal, block, two offensive rebounds and three layups in which the last grew the lead to 21 points for the Express.
Chad Duke would proceed to knock down two free throws in the waning moments of the period, before Ramon Santos knocked down a long ball to end the first half.
Jovan Young darted to the rim on the fastbreak to open up the second stanza, followed by an
Abubakar Kromah and-one jump shot to extend the advantage to 31. Monroe proceeded to go on another 10 point run to extend the lead to 41 points, including two fast break jams from Molina. The blue and gold did not take their foot off the gas for the remainder of the evening, leading by as many as 51 in the closing moments of the game. The Express ultimately took the victory by 48, with a 105-57 final in the near wire-to-wire victory.
Six Express players registered double-digit points on the evening, with Duke leading all scorers with a season-high 17 points, four steals (season-high), three assists and three rebounds. Molina followed with 13 points, three assists, three steals, one block (all season-highs) and one rebound.
