SYRACUSE, NY – Monroe-Bronx women's basketball opened their season in the Onondaga Kickoff Tournament with a 72-75 nailbiter against the #6 ranked Onondaga Community College Lazers. With the loss, the Express begin their season 0-1, while the Lazers move to 1-0. Monroe has a chance to even their early season record when they take on the Rowan College of Gloucester County Roadrunners in the latter half of the tournament tomorrow.
When asked about his team's performance, Coach Thompson said, "Onondaga was a tough team, no surprise they are #6 in the country. But we held our own the whole way through. Played tough and made some very tough plays. In the end it came down to a possession or two. But we will be ready to bounce back tomorrow."
Monroe's leading scorers were Janay Legagneur with 24 points, 10 rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block, and Aleah James with 20 points, 13 rebounds, two steals and three assists. Second year guard Nyeira Spady had seven points, three assists, two steals and one block in 11 minutes of action. Alyssa Grant and Anastasia Davis both scored their first career points with nine points and two points respectively.
The Express are back in action Sunday (Nov. 6) for the second half of the Onondaga Kickoff Tournament, taking on the Rowan College of Gloucester County Roadrunners at 12 PM.
