NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Monroe Express JV women's basketball bounced back from a recent two game slide Wednesday evening with a 73-31 victory against the Monroe College Mustangs inside the Monroe Athletic Complex.
Shasauna Ballantyne led the charge for the Express, striking first with a fast break layup. The Mustangs would answer at the 8 minute mark with a Teah Mckoy jumper inside the free-throw line from Jenny Washington. Christina Reilly would answer with a score of her own, following a defensive breakdown that left her wide open down the floor for an easy interior bucket, followed by an Esmerelda Guzman layup after Kassandra Marks picked off Washington in the half-court. Marks would have a great first quarter on both sides of the floor, going 6-of-9 from the field, collecting a career-high seven steals and tying her season-high for points with 12.
The Express kept up the pace in the second period, featuring a Soumayatou Yaogo triple to beat the shot clock buzzer. Kuari Green was able to get into the teeth of the defense on several drives scoring 10 first-half points to push the Express into the intermission with a 44-7 lead.
Marks continued her scoring into the third period, knocking down a jumper off a Mustangs miss, then hitting two free throws a few plays later. At the 3 minute mark, Jenny Washington would call her own number, with the layup after the steal. Doretha Brooks got into the scoring column in the fourth quarter, knocking down two left wing 3-pointers. In the waning minutes of the last period, Yaogo scored her second bucket of the contest, which eventually led to the 73-31 final.
Marks led all scorers with 20 points (career-high), seven steals (career-high), three rebounds and two assists. Adriana Aybar followed with 12 points, five rebounds, three steals and one assist. Kuari Green added 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting off the bench. Esmerelda Guzman pitched in a career stat-line with 11 rebounds, seven steals and five assists.
