Monroe Express Women’s Basketball Defeat BMCC on the Road

The Express return to play Saturday (Nov. 19) for a road matchup against Union City College

NEW YORK, NY – Monroe Express women's basketball traveled to Lower Manhattan Thursday (Nov. 17) for a Region 15 tilt against the Borough of Manhattan Community College Panthers, defeating the home team with a final of 90-14. This is the Express' highest scoring output of the young season, and continues their unbeated streak in conference play. The Express move to 2-2 (2-0 Region 15) and the Panthers fall to 1-5 (1-1 Region 15).

The Express came out the gates rolling on the defensive end only allowing four Panther points in the first quarter. Sierra Jones broke the scoring ice for Monroe with a steal and score. The Express had active hands during this contest, picking off 28 BMCC miscues, which is their highest tally for the season. 

The blue and gold would see their lead balloon to 41 points by halftime, after a Nyeira Spady steal led to am Aleah James bucket to put the game at 50-9 into the halftime break. With the game seemlingly out of reach, Monroe stood the course scoring nine unanswered to start the third period. The Express allowed just five second half points, as they rode to a 90-14 victory. 

Five Express players registered double-digit points, leading with Spady who tallied 13 points, six steals, four rebounds and two assists. Sierra Jones was closely behind with 12 points, three steals and two assists. Janay Legagneur added 11 points, five rebounds, four steals, and one assist. Fatima Thompson notched her first double-double of the season with 10 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals while Ariella Johnson pitched in 10 points, three steals, two assists and two rebounds.

The Express are back in action Saturday (Nov. 19) for non-conference action against the Union City College Owls at 2 PM in Cranford, NJ.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
