MIDDLETOWN, NY – #1 seed Monroe-Bronx Express women's volleyball competed Saturday afternoon overcoming the Queensborough Community College Tigers in a dramatic five-set semifinal matchup (3-2, 25-20, 24-26, 23-25, 25-22, 15-7) and closely battling but falling short to the Dutchess Community College Falcons after three sets (0-3, 22-25, 22-25, 21-25) in the final round. The Express reached the Region 15 Championship Final for the first time in program history.
Monroe 3, QCC 2 (25-20, 24-26, 23-25, 25-22, 15-7)
The Express began their afternoon overcoming a hard fought, five set (25-20, 24-26, 23-25, 25-22, 15-7) contest against the Queensborough Community College Tigers in the semifinal round of the Region 15 championship tournament.Â
Lisanel Rodriguez anchored the Express offense with 31 points on 68 swings, and 23 digs.
Soumayatou Yaogo followed with 13 points, 11 kills, seven digs and two service aces.
Luisanni Rodriguez added 34 assists, while
Valery Nunez pitched in 27 digs.
Monroe 0, DCC 3 (22-25, 22-25, 21-25)Â
Monroe-Bronx women's volleyball culminated their Region 15 postseason Saturday afternoon, resulting in a 3-2 setback (22-25, 22-25, 21-25) to the eventual champion, Dutchess Community College Falcons in the final round.Â
Despite the loss, the Express overcame the Falcons in points (55 to 53.5) and kills (46 to 41). The Falcons capitalized in digs (72 to 54), blocks (7 to 5) and aces (5 to 4).Â
Lisanel Rodriguez led all scorers with 22 points, 21 kills, 14 digs and one service ace. Yaogo stepped in the final game with 15 points, 12 kills, three blocks and three digs.
Luisanni Rodriguez had 26 assists, while
Valery Nunez registered 23 digs.
The Express completed their season with a 15-2 record, going 7-1 in the Region 15 conference. Monroe also ends their 2022 campaign with two All-Region first team selections (Lisanel &
Luisanni Rodriguez), one All-Region second team selection and Defensive Player of the Week (
Valery Nunez), an All-Region Sportsmanship team selection (
Lisanel Rodriguez) and Coach of the Year (
Joel Sanchez).Â
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
