BRONX, NY – Despite their brief history, Monroe-Bronx women's volleyball amassed their first 12 game win streak Wednesday evening with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-6, 25-20) victory over the Bronx Community College Broncos inside Alumni Gym. The victory also raised the Express' win streak over BCC to five games, dating back to the 2019 season.
Monroe went off to a scorching start, scoring 18 of the set's first 22 points to get off to a staggering lead. The Broncos began their own scoring run, capitalizing on multiple attack errors by the Express.
Xing Stewart-Greer was able to swing the momentum back in the Expres' favor with an assist from
Yorlennis Nunez.
Monroe was able to run away with the game in the second set, before a competitive third period went underway. The Broncos broke the scoring ice with a Jessica Diaz service ace before the
Laura Pinales kill evened the score. BCC would eventually go up by four points, which was their largest of the contest. Both teams would trade the lead by a run of service errors before consecutive
Kelsey Tavarez kills put Monroe in the driver's seat, to push the lead to six points. The Broncos would trim the lead to two, before two service aces would settle the final.
Laura Pinales led the contest with 10 points, five kills, five service aces and one dig.
Yorlennis Nunez followed behind with 10 points, 13 assists, nine service aces and one kill.
Lesly Almonte added five kills while
Shirley Garo added four.
The Express led the contest with 43 points, 22 service aces, 21 kills and 15 assists. BCC edged Monroe in digs with 12.
The Express conclude their regular season Saturday (Oct. 15) with a stint against the Dutchess Community College Falcons.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
