Quick Start Propels Mustangs Past Monroe Express Women's Basketball In Inter-Campus Showdown

New Rochelle, NY, January 30, 2021 – On Sunday afternoon, the Monroe Express women's basketball team was bested 67-42 by the Monroe College Mustangs in an Inter-Campus showdown at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Express fall to 13-7 with the loss while the Mustangs improve to 10-12 on the season.

Freshman Nyeira Spady (New Rochelle, New York) led the Express offensively on the afternoon with a game-high 17 points missing her team-leading eighth double-double and third straight by two rebounds a team-best eight boards. Sophomore Tariah Bryant (Brooklyn, New York) snatched a career and game-high eight steals while scoring seven points and grabbing five boards. Bryant and Shashauna Ballantyne (Brooklyn, New York) dished out a team-best two assists each, while Ballantyne and Spady recorded three steals each. 
 
Monroe-Bronx scored 19 points off of 33 forced turnovers, while the Mustangs scored 28 points off their 28 turnovers. The Express grasped 17 steals and 10 or more for the sixth straight game and the 17th in 20 games this year.
 
After being held scoreless and trailing 21-0 after one the Express scored nine of the first 14 points of the second quarter to cut the deficit down to 17, 26-9 at 4:31 on a Crystal Traverso (Bronx, New York)  three-pointer. However, that was as close as the Express would get as the Mustangs cruised the rest of the way.
 
The Mustangs had three players score in double-figures led by Olivia Medford, who posted a double-double with a team-high 16 points and game-high 12 rebounds, while Daja Wentz and Sara Carvajal-Caro added 15 points and 12 points. Tanae Arnold also dished out a game-best four assists, and Naomi Barnwell hauled down 10 rebounds while she teamed up with Wentz to gobble up a team-high four steals each.
 
The Express women's basketball team will look to end their four-game skid against Bronx rival Bronx Community College on Tuesday, February 1 at 5 p.m. at Alumni Gym in the Bronx, New York. For more information, visit the Monroe Express Women's Basketball Schedule Page.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 36 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports program, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 17 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
