Late Second Half Surge Powers SUNY Sullivan Past Monroe Express J.V. Men’s Basketball, 69-63

New Rochelle, NY, January 30, 2021 – The Monroe Express J.V. men's basketball team's late lead evaporated in a tough 69-63 loss to SUNY Sullivan on Sunday afternoon at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Express fall to 4-3 on the season with the loss.

The Express three players recorded double-digit scoring efforts led by freshman Chamarri Baskerville's (Queens, New York) team-high 22 points, and game-high tied four steals. Classmates Darius Rivers (Bronx, New York) and Audley Falconer (Bronx, New York) contributed 15 and 14 points while Rivers joined Baskerville to rip down a game-high eight rebounds. Leshawn Bryant (Brooklyn, New York) dished out three assists and Falconer blocked a team-high two shots.

The Generals raced out to an early 10-5 first-half advantage on a Sayvion Daniel tip-in at 15:45 before the Express countered with a 7-2 run capped off by a follow from Baskerville at 14:19 to tie it at 12. Monroe-Bronx outscored SUNY Sullivan 25-13 over the next 11:30 to stretch the lead to its largest of the day 12, 37-25 at 2:47 when Kyle Parks (Yonkers, New York) went 1-for-2 at the charity stripe and carried it into the halftime break with a 39-30 lead.

SUNY Sullivan was a different team in the second half coming out hot early in the second half with a ferocious 18-4 run to knot the game up at 43 and go in front 45-43 on layups from Miguel Alejandro at 10:46 and Sayvion Daniel at 9:38. The Generals increased the margin to five, 48-43 on a three-pointer by Myles Debrecourt before the Express recorded nine of the following 13 points to tie it up at the 5:21 mark at 52.

Rivers put the Express back in front 55-54 at the 4:33 mark, and then the Generals went 2-for-4 at the line to make it 56-54 before Baskerville put Monroe-Bronx back in front 58-56 at 3:49. However, Sullivan took over down the stretch with an 11-4 run, going ahead with Zech Barne's two free-throws at 2:24 and holding off the Express for a 69-63 comeback victory.
