New Rochelle, N.Y., September 14, 2021 - The Monroe Express women's volleyball team fell to Region 15 opponent Nassau Community College in straight sets 25-19,25-20, and 25-19 Tuesday evening at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The loss drops the Express to 0-2 overall (0-1 Region 15) while the Lions picked up their first victory on the year, improving to 1-5 overall (1-0 Region 15).
Sophomore Jeribeth Hodge (Bronx, N.Y.) spearheaded the offensive attack for the Express burying a team-high six kills and dishing out a team-best five assists while registering two service aces, tying a team-high. During the evening, freshman
Adaiah Felix (Bronx, New York) put up four kills while classmate
Arielys Colon (Bronx, New York) tied a team-best with two service aces and joined classmate
Emely Diaz (Bronx, New York) and sophomore
Angelique Reyes (Bronx, N.Y.) with two kills apiece.
Defensively, the Express had three players register double-digit digs on the night.
Colon and
Diaz both recorded a career-best 16 digs, while
Hodge contributed with 14 digs.
Both squads went back in forth in the first set, exchanging five different lead changes and knotting it up six times. After exchanging the first eight points, Nassau Community College posted three of the following four points to lead 7-5, then Monroe-Bronx went on a 3-0 run - two kills coming from
Colon and
Hodge - to retake the lead 8-7. After the Lions established a 6-2 run to go back in front 13-10, the Express regained their lead 16-14 utilizing a 6-1 run before the Lions took control, scoring 11 out of the final 14 points to take the first set 25-19.
The Express got off to a fast start in the second set with an 8-1 run before the Lions roared back with a 10-3 run to tie it at 11 all. After it was tied up again at 12, Nassau community college scored six of the next seven points to extend their lead to 18-13 then Monroe-Bronx put together five straight points to knot it up at 18 before the Lions closed out the set with seven of the final 10 points to claim the second set 25-20.
Monroe-Bronx came out firing early again in the third set, building a 7-3 advantage before Nassau countered with a 6-1 run to tie it and go in front 9-8. The Express strung together five of the following six points –with three kills from
Hodge and one from
Reyes – to tie it and go back in front 13-10 before the Lions would take it from there with a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 17-13 and never looked back taking the match with a 25-19 victory.
Freshman Chloe Marquardt led all swingers for Nassau Community College with a game-high 14 kills, and classmates Isabella Barretta and Angelina Fernandez put up game-bests with 12 assists and six service aces. Libero Olivia Castillo led the Lions defensively with a match-best 19 digs, while Madison Cipriano contributed 14 digs.
The Express are on the road for the rest of the month and beginning their eight-game road trip in Region 15 action next Thursday, September 23, against Queensborough Community College at 7 p.m. at Queensborough Gym in Bayside, New York. For more information on the game, please visit the

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 36 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports program, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
