SELDEN, N.Y., May 8, 2021 – In the final two contests of the 2021 regular season, the Monroe College Express softball team lost a pair of contests at Suffolk County Community College Saturday afternoon. The Express fall to 3-15 overall with the losses, while the Sharks improve to 19-2 on the year.

GAME 1: Suffolk 13, Monroe 3 (5 INN)
After a quiet first inning, the Sharks picked up six runs in the bottom of the second to take a big lead early on.

Ashleigh Stewart led off the top of the third with a walk, and then
Nicole Peralta hit into a fielder's choice. With two outs,
Paola Calderon doubled to center to score Peralta and make it a 6-1 game.
Genesis Duarte-Suarez followed with an RBI single to center to bring the score to 6-2.

Suffolk erased Monroe's progress in the bottom of the third, as the Sharks put two runs on the board of their own to go up, 8-2. They then picked up five more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 13-2 advantage.

The Express kept fighting in the top of the fifth. Calderon hit a one-out double, and then moved to third on a ground out by Duarte-Suarez.
Arlenny Diaz then singled into left, scoring Calderon to pick up Monroe's third run of the day.

Samantha Butler picked up the complete-game victory for Suffolk to improve to 9-1 on the year.
Zahra Medina took the loss for Monroe, falling to 2-7.

Calderon finished 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs and an RBI in Game 1. Diaz hit 2-for-3 with an RBI, while
Melissa De Los Santos also batted 2-for-3. Duarte-Suarez knocked in a run in a 1-for-3 outing, while Stewart hit 1-for-1.

GAME 2: Suffolk 14, Monroe 1 (5 INN)
Game 2 saw the Sharks control from start to finish. They picked up three runs in each of the first two frames before stringing eight runs together in the bottom of the fourth. The Express got a run in the top of the fifth when Stewart scored on a passed ball, but they ultimately fell, 14-1.

Gianna Postliglione got the win for Suffolk to improve to 10-1 on the season.
Mia Colamarino took the look for Monroe to drop to 1-3.

Calderon, Duarte-Suarez and
Raileni Amarante all hit 1-for-2 in Game 2. Peralta finished 1-for-3. Stewart scored Monroe's only run after going 0-for-1 with a walk.

The Express and Sharks will go head-to-head in the Region 15 Championship next Saturday, May 15, at Suffolk. A doubleheader will be played on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. If the doubleheader is split, a third game will be played on Sunday, May 16.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 36 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports program, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 17 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
