Monroe Express Men’s Soccer Shuts out No. 5 Suffolk to Claim Top Seed and First-Round Bye in Region 15 Championship Tournament

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., May 14, 2021 – The Monroe College Express men's soccer team wrapped up the regular season in a big way, picking up a 1-0 victory over Suffolk County Community College on Friday at Flowers Park to earn the No. 1-seed in the upcoming Region 15 Championship Tournament. The Express improve to 3-2 overall, while the Sharks drop to 4-2-1.

Saturday's victory also wrapped up Region 15 play for the season. The Express now finish with the region's top record at 3-1. Suffolk finished the year 2-1-1 in Region 15 play, while Nassau Community College went 0-3-1. Suffolk and Nassau will now play a semifinal matchup during the week next week, while the Express earn a bye to the championship game.

After going most of the game without any scoring, the Express finally broke through in the 77th minute. James Gerbier outran the defense and fired on goal. The goalie got a piece of it, but not enough to deflect it away from the goal, seeing it go into the back-left corner of the net to give the Express a 1-0 lead with time beginning to run thin.

Goalkeeper Jose Hernandez earned the shutout victory with five saves to improve to 3-2 on the season. Suffolk netminder Jay Scolaro drops to 4-2-1 on the year after allowing one goal with three saves.

Gerbier's goal was the only point of Friday afternoon's contest. He also led the team with five shots in the game. Hans Langer fired off three, putting all three of them on net.

The Express outshot the Sharks, 16-9, in the win. They also held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Express will play next on Sunday, May 23, when they host the 2021 Region 15 Championship game against a to-be-determined opponent. Location and time are also yet to be determined.
