NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., April 27, 2021 – The Monroe College Express softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Suffolk County Community College Tuesday evening at Flowers Park in New Rochelle. The Express fall to 3-11 overall with the losses, while the Sharks improve to 15-2.

GAME 1: Suffolk 24, Monroe 1 (5 INN)
The Sharks got off to a quick start, using back-to-back-to-back home runs to open the game, leading to a six-run rally in the top of the first for an immediate 6-0 advantage.

The Express got a run back in the bottom of the second. After a triple by
Nicole Peralta,
Melissa De Los Santos beat out a bunt single, bringing in Peralta to make it a 6-1 game.

The Sharks put together another big rally in the top of the third. The visitors tallied eight runs in the inning, pushing their lead to 14-1. They added another four in the top of the fourth to make it an 18-1 ballgame. Another six runs came in in the top of the fifth to reach the eventual final score of 24-1.

Samantha Butler got the complete-game victory for the Sharks to improve to 7-1 on the season.
Ashleigh Stewart took the loss for Monroe to fall to 0-2.

Arlenny Diaz hit 2-for-3 in the game with a double, while
Zahra Medina batted 1-for-2. Peralta finished 2-for-2 with a run scored and a triple. De Los Santos went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

GAME 2: Suffolk 13, Monroe 3 (5 INN)
The Sharks put up four runs with a pair of homers in the top of the first in Tuesday's second contest, and then added another six runs in the second to take a 10-0 advantage.

The Express got one back in the bottom of the second when
Raileni Amarante stroked an RBI triple to right-center, scoring Peralta to get the home team on the board.

Another two runs came in for the Sharks in the top of the third to give them a 12-1 lead. The Express continued to fight, bringing in a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by
Paola Calderon that scored
Ashleigh Stewart. A double by
Genesis Duarte-Suarez then knocked in Diaz to make it a 12-3 game. Suffolk picked up one more run in the top of the fourth to close out the day with a 13-3 win.

Gianna Postiglione improved to 8-1 with the win in the circle for the Sharks. Medina took the loss to drop to 2-4.

Calderon and Duarte-Suarez had matching stat lines in Game 2, as each hit 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Peralta scored a run after hitting 1-for-2, while Amarante knocked in a run in a 1-for-2 outing that included a triple. Diaz finished 1-for-3 with a run scored in the game.

The Express will look to bounce back on Saturday, May 1, when they visit these same Sharks out in Brentwood, N.Y. First pitch of Game 1 is set for 1 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 36 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports program, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 17 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
