Monroe Express Women’s Volleyball Falls Twice In Regional Tri-Match On Saturday

Garden City, N.Y., October 9, 2021 - The Monroe Express women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches in four sets to FIT and Queensborough Community College during a Regional tri-match Saturday afternoon at Nassau C.C. The Express dropped to 3-7 overall and 3-6 in Region 15 competition after a strong effort against two of the top programs in the Region.

The first two sets were highly competitive as the Tigers took the first one 25-20, and the Express rallied to punch back with a 25-22 victory. FIT took control of the match in the third set, cruising to a 25-9 win and holding off Monroe-Bronx 25-22 in the fourth set for the victory.

Freshman Adaiah Felix (Bronx, New York) led all swingers with six kills while sophomore Yorlennis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y.) smashed five kills and tied a team-best with two service aces. Fellow sophomore Jeribeth Hodge (Bronx, N.Y.) dished out a team-high 15 assists and tied with freshman Emely Diaz (Bronx, New York) for a team-high in service aces with two.

Freshman Arielys Colon (Bronx, New York) led the defense, fielding a team-best seven digs in the match.

Two weeks after a hard-fought three-set match, the Express came out firing in the first set to win 25-21 before Queensborough fought back to win a back and forth second set 25-23. The Tigers took it from coasting in the third set 25-15 and cruising to a 25-8 win in the fourth.

Freshman Adaiah Felix (Bronx, New York) and sophomore Jeribeth Hodge (Bronx, N.Y.) led the way offensively with six kills apiece, while Arielys Colon (Bronx, New York) hit a career-high .667 (5k-e-6a) in the match and placed a career-high 13 service aces.

The Express return to the court on Tuesday, October 12, on the road against Regional opponent Nassau Community College at 7 p.m. in Garden City, NY. For more information, visit the Monroe Express women's volleyball page.

Notables

  • After starting 2021 with just six kills through the first three games, Adaiah Felix (Bronx, New York) has caught fire, burying 64 kills over her last seven games to lead the squad with team-best 73 kills for the season.
  • Arielys Colon (Bronx, New York)  has served up 10 or more service aces in two matches this season and is the first to accomplish this feat since Smeritte Colon did it twice in 2019 against Bunker Hill Community College on September 28, 2019, and Orange County Community College on October 15, 2019.
  • Jeribeth Hodge's (Bronx, N.Y.) streak of six games with double-digit assists ended in the final match of the Regional double dual against Queensborough. However, she has been setting the tone for the Express offense with six double-digit assist games, including four 20 plus assists games, in her last seven matches.
