Bronx, NY, October 5, 2021 - Sophomore Yorlennis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y.) smashed a career-high 11 kills as the Monroe Express women's volleyball team extended their winning streak to three matches defeating Hostos Community College 3-1 in four sets, 25-19, 24-26, 25-13, 25-17, on the road Tuesday evening at the Swamp. With the victory, the Express improve to 3-5 (3-4 Region XV) while the Caimans fall to 1-5 (1-5 Region XV).
After the Express took the opening set, Hostos rallied to even up the match at one apiece, winning the second set 26-24. Monroe-Bronx cruised in the third set 25-13 and outdueled the Caimans in the fourth set 25-17 for the victory.
The Express also tied their season-best, hitting .436 (28k-11e-39a), during their four-set victory over the Caimans.
Nunez surpassed her career-high from over the weekend, uncorking a career-high .692 hitting percentage for the match, and freshman Adaiah Felix (Bronx, New York) recorded eight kills on the evening. Freshman Arielys Colon (Bronx, New York) teamed up with Nunez and Felix to tie a team-high in service aces with two, while four other players placed one in the match. Sophomore Jeribeth Hodge (Bronx, N.Y.) distributed a match-high 22 assists and had four kills, while Colon had three of her own.
Defensively, freshman Emely Diaz (Bronx, New York) and Felix led the way with five digs each, and Hodge threw down a team-best three blocks upfront. Freshman Sheiraliz Bonifacio (Bronx, New York) also posted a block on the night.
For Hostos Community College, Savannah Williams finished with a double-double posting a match-high 17 kills and 15 digs. Ashly Cabral dished out a team-high 21 assists while Evelina Nova contributed defensively with nine digs.
The Express will take their three-game winning streak into an important double duel Saturday against two Region 15 heavyweights on Saturday, October 9 against FIT at noon and Queensborough Community College at 1:15 p.m. in Garden City, New York. - Yorlennis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y.) has struck 30 kills in her last five matches and hit .600 or better in two consecutive contests. She registered a .667 hitting percentage against the Bronx C.C. during a three-set victory during a Regional double dual.
- Jeribeth Hodge (Bronx, N.Y.) has registered five straight double-digit assist games and recorded 20 or more assists for her fourth straight game and tenth time in her career after doing it six times in 2019. She has 99 assists over her last five games and leads the team with 109 assists on the year, and has 653 assists for her career.
- Adaiah Felix (Bronx, New York) has buried 43 kills over her last four matches and leads the Express with 61 kills for the season.
- Arielys Colon (Bronx, New York) has served up 28 service aces over the last five matches and has recorded two or more in four of seven contests this season and one in each.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 36 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports program, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
