Monroe Express Women's Volleyball Swept In Regional Double Dual To Wrap Up 2021 Regular Season

Garden City, N.Y., October 16, 2021 - The Monroe Express women's volleyball team was swept in their final two matches of the 2021 regular season in four sets to Orange County Community College (28-30,25-20,24-26,11-25) and straight sets to Dutchess C.C. (25-27,19-25,18-25) in their final Regional Double Dual of the season on Saturday afternoon in Middletown, NY. The Express concludes their 2021 campaign 3-10 overall (3-9 Region XV).

Freshman Adaiah Felix (Bronx, New York) led all swingers in the first match with a team-high 11 kills, while classmate Arielys Colon (Bronx, New York) smashed a career-high seven kills and served up a team-best four service aces. Sophomore Jeribeth Hodge (Bronx, N.Y.) dished out a team-best 19 assists and recorded three service aces and two kills, while freshman Angelique Reyes (Bronx, N.Y.) served up two service aces in her return. 

Emely Diaz (Bronx, New York) led the way defensively with seven digs while Reyes posted five and Colon registered four.

The first two sets were a seesaw battle between both squads as Orange County Community College withstood all the punches thrown by Monroe-Bronx to take the first one 30-28, and then the Express bounced back with a 25-20 victory in the second. The Colts would take control of the match in the final two sets edging the Express 26-24 in the third set and rolling 25-11 in the fourth for the victory.

Freshman Adaiah Felix (Bronx, New York) put up her second double-double of the season and her third consecutive double-digit kill performance leading all hitters with a team-best 10 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Jeribeth Hodge (Bronx, N.Y.) distributed a team-high 13 assists and uncorked five kills, while underclassmen Arielys Colon (Bronx, New York) had a team-best four service aces and classmate Esmeralda Villagomez (Bronx, N.Y.) had two of her own.

Defensively, freshman Angelique Reyes (Bronx, N.Y.) and Colon registered seven digs apiece, while freshman Emely Diaz (Bronx, New York) and Hodge had five each.

After Dutchess held off Monroe-Bronx 27-25 in a hotly contested first set, they rolled 25-19 in the second set and 25-18 in the third to take the match.

For Dutchess Community College, freshman Kathleen Brennan and Leah Vitiello recorded double-doubles, with Brennan posted a match-high 13 kills and 17 digs while Vitiello had a match-high 22 digs and 10 kills. Fellow freshman Jordyn Wilsea dished out a match-best 26 assists, and classmate Sienna Bernier had 19 digs.

The Express enter the Region 15 Volleyball Tournament as the eighth seed and will face top-seeded Queensborough Community College in the quarterfinals on Thursday, October 21, at RFK Gymnasium in Bayside, New York. Notables 

  • Adaiah Felix (Bronx, New York) has hammered a team-high 105 kills on the season and is the second freshman in program history to reach that mark since Irianna Castillo did it in 2019. She has recorded a team-best six double-digit kill games, including three straight and 75 kills in her last eight matches.
  • Jeribeth Hodge (Bronx, N.Y.) has registered three straight double-digit assist games and has put up a team-leading nine double-digit assist games on the season. Hodge has given out 713 career assists which are tops in program history, and she surpassed Rachel Arias's mark of 214 career assists on September 26, 2019, against Rockland Community College. She also has 28 career double-digit assist performances for her career.


ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 36 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports program, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 17 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
