Gerbier and Lopez Net Two Goals Apiece As Men’s Soccer Cruises To An 8-0 Road Victory Over Rockland Community College

SUFFERN, N.Y., October 13, 2021 - The Monroe Express men's soccer team avoided a hangover from a heartbreaking Regional loss just eight days ago, coasting to an 8-0 bounce-back victory on the road Wednesday afternoon in Suffern, NY. With the victory, the Express's record improves to 8-2 (7-1 Region 15) while the Hawks fall to 1-7 (1-6 Region 15).

Monroe-Bronx came out aggressively in the first half, immediately finding the back of the net 20 seconds into the match to go up 1-0 when Edwin Zuniga Lopez (Bronx, NY) netted an unassisted goal for his seventh marker of the season. Fellow sophomore James Gerbier (Rosedale, N.Y.) buried his team-leading eighth and ninth markers of the season in the 25th and 26th minute to increase the Express's advantage to 3-0. Lopez and Jean Woobens Zamy (Port Au Prince, Haiti) provided the helpers on both goals.

The Express finished the first half strong when Lopez notched his second tally of the match and sixth multi-goal game of his career in the 35th minute off a corner kick feed from Victor Flores (White Plains, N.Y.) to give the Express a 4-0 halftime cushion.

Monroe-Bronx kept the pedal to the metal in the second half, adding to their lead in the 50th minute to make it 5-0 on Marwan Awad's (Cairo, Egypt) first goal of the season off a corner kick pass from Andres Lora (Buenos Aires, Argentina). Six minutes later, Awad returned the favor feeding Liam Garcia (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) for his first tally of the season in the 56th minute, stretching the Express advantage to 6-0.

After Lora added his third goal of the season in the 77th minute to make it 7-0, sophomore Givonchi Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) rounded out the scoring for the Monroe-Bronx two minutes later with his first marker of the season from Majid Peltier in the 79th minute to give the Express an 8-0 victory.

The Express have to the opportunity this Saturday, October 16, to set a new program record for regular-season wins when they close out their regular season on the road against Orange County Community College in Middletown, NY. For more information, visit the Monroe Express Men's Soccer Schedule
