Chester, N.Y., March 1, 2020 – The Monroe Express baseball team fell to Sussex County Community College on Monday afternoon, 11-0, in a run-rule shortened five innings.

Sophomore Demetrio Rodriguez and freshman Jose Santana Lebron each recorded a hit for the Express in the loss. Rodriguez led off the game with a base hit while Lebron led off the second frame with a ground-rule double to left field.

Five pitchers combined for the Express in the defeat. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Brian Espaillat took the loss allowing three runs, five hits while striking out three batters in 2.0 innings of work. Right-handed pitcher Jason Veras tossed 1.2 innings of relief work, striking out three batters.

Up next, the Express travels to Hampton, Virginia for a three-game weekend set at Thomas Nelson Community College. The action begins on Saturday, Mar. 7 with a single game, followed by a doubleheader on Sunday to round out the road trip.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE

The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
