New Rochelle, N.Y., February 13, 2020 – The Monroe College Express women's basketball program picked up a dominating NJCAA Region XV win over Kingsborough Community College, 76-51, on Thursday evening in their regular-season home finale.
Prior to the game, the Monroe Express athletic department and women's basketball program honored the program's lone sophomore night honoree
Monae Laing.
With the win against the Waves, the Express move to 17-11 overall and 11-4 in conference play.
Monroe was led by freshman
Quanisha Griffin's game-high 27 points, four rebounds, four assists, and six steals. Rookie
Ramatoulaye Diallo posted 15 points, six rebounds, along with a career-high four assists, eight steals, and two blocks. Laing added 10 points and six rebounds while freshman
Darlenny Liranzo chipped in 11 points and three steals.
Freshmen
Aissata Diallo and
Desteny Arzu each had nine rebounds apiece while
Anya Shepherd added six points and two rebounds.
The Express controlled the contest from the opening tip, opening up a 13-point lead, 24-11, to close out the first quarter. A quick 9-2 run to start the second frame pushed the Express to a 20-point lead, 33-13, with 7:08 to go in the period.
A 16-6 run midway through the third quarter helped the Express extend their lead margin to 25 points, 61-36, with 29 seconds to go. The Express held Kingsborough to four made field goals in the final quarter en-route to the victory.
The Express women's basketball program will hit the road next for their final two games of the regular season, traveling to Dutchess Community College first on Saturday, Feb. 15 for a 1 p.m. matchup.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
