Fred Guillou stopped 11 shots without allowing a goal, and
Edwin Zuniga Lopez tallied four scores, lifting the Monroe College Express men's soccer team to a 6-0 victory over Region XV foe Bronx Community College at Ohio Field on Tuesday. The Express remain unbeaten and improve to 5-0-1 on the year and 4-0-1 in region play, while Bronx drops to 2-3 overall and 1-2 against Region XV opponents.
Guillou's 11 saves were a new season-high for the Express netminder, and the shutout was his first of the season. He improved to 3-0-1 on the year with the win. Playing in just his second game this season, Zuniga Lopez tallied a team-high four goals, giving him seven scores across those two games.
Emerson Guevara got things started for the Express at the 18-minute mark off an assist from
Edwin Peralta to make it a 1-0 game. In the 24th minute, Zugina Lopez got on the board for the first time after a feed from
Momodu Touray, doubling the lead at 2-0.
Jean Woobens Zamy was then set up for a score by
Elhadj Diallo to put the Express up by three. Zuniga Lopez then made it 4-0 with an unassisted goal in the 42nd minute, sending the game to halftime with that score.
Zuniga Lopez scored twice more in the second half. His first was another unassisted goal at 80:02 to make it a five-goal game. Zuniga Lopez tallied one more in the 84th minute off another Touray assist to cap off the 6-0 win.
Guevara and Woobens Zamy picked up the other two goals for Monroe in the win. Touray finished with two assists, while Peralta and Diallo had one apiece.
The Express outshot the Broncos, 31-24, and held an 18-11 advantage in shots on goal. The Broncos took a 5-4 edge in corner kicks in the game.
The Express will look to keep rolling on Saturday, Sept. 21, when they take on Queensborough Community College in Region XV action in Bayside, N.Y. The game is set to begin at 12 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 12 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
