NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., September 17, 2019 – The Monroe College Express women's soccer team played its first home game of the season on Tuesday at Skidelsky Field at Flowers Park, a Region XV matchup against Suffolk County Community College. The Express fell to the Sharks by a score of 3-0, falling to 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in region play. The Sharks improve to 1-2 on the year and 1-1 against Region XV opponents.
The Sharks took a quick lead in the game when Kayleigh Milton scored in the fifth minute after a playing a ball in the box following a corner kick and sending it over the defense and the keeper for a 1-0 lead. Michelle Swinton scored on a free kick from about 25 yards out in the 20th minute for a 2-0 lead, which proved to be the score heading into halftime. Mikayla Crosier added one more for the Sharks in the 70th minute of the game to cap off their 3-0 win.
Emily Deehan got the start and the win for the Sharks on Tuesday, making three saves in the first half without allowing a goal. Madison Cruz did not face a shot on goal in the second half. Express keeper
Julia Hermoso falls to 0-4 after allowing two goals with six saves in 28:12 between the pipes.
Myrna Gregorie took over during the first half, making eight saves while allowing just one goal in 61:48.
Ramatoulaye Diallo led the Express with three shots in the game, all of which went on goal.
Genesis Estrada added another shot for Monroe.
Despite 39 total shots by the Sharks, improved defensive play by the Express caused 23 of those shots to go off target, helping to keep the scoring down for the Sharks.
The Express will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 24, when they host Dutchess Community College at Flowers Park in New Rochelle in another Region XV matchup. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 12 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
