STONE RIDGE, N.Y., August 29, 2019 – Behind a trio of freshman goal scorers, and
Sergio Servin's clean slate, the Monroe Express men's soccer team defeated the Ulster County Community College Senators, 4-0, in their season opener on Thursday.
After a slow start,
Emerson Guevara got the Express on the scoreboard in the 30th minute, notching his first goal of the season off an assist from
Michael Portillo.
Just under 10 minutes later,
Momodu Touray doubled the Express lead heading into halftime with another goal, this one of an assistant from Guevara.
The Express continued to pepper the net in the second half, outshooting the Senators, 8-1 in the first half and 12-3 in the second, before Guevara found the back of the net once again.
In the 65th minute, Guevara notched his second goal of the game and gave the Express a 3-0 lead off an assist from
Andres Lora. And with just under eight minutes to play, Jean Woodbens Zamy scored his first goal of the season, solidifying the victory off an assist from
Armando Bravo.
Guevara led the Express with two goals on eight shots, adding an assist, while Woobens Zamy added a goal on four shots.
In goal for the Express, Servin put up a clean sheet, keeping SUNY Ulster off the scoreboard for the entire match.
With the win, the Express move to 1-0 on the season, while the Senators drop to 0-1.
The Express will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 3 when they host Westchester Community College in their home opener at 4 p.m. at Flowers Park in New Rochelle, N.Y.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 12 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
