Monroe Express Softball Falls Twice at Ocean County

TOMS RIVER, N.J., April 18, 2019 – Monroe Express softball fell twice in their doubleheader at Ocean County Community College on Thursday, falling, 15-3, in game one, and 14-0, in game two. With the two losses, the Express drop to 3-11 on the year, while the Vikings move to 8-14.
 
GAME 1: OCEAN COUNTY 15, MONROE 3 (5)
Monroe took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against the Vikings. Yejeiri Frias led off with a bunt single and took third on Zahra Medina's single to right. Media stole second, and advanced to third on the catcher's throwing error as Frias scored to give the Express a 1-0 lead. Yesennia Baez followed with an RBI double to bring Medina home, extending the lead to 2-0.
 
But the Vikings came right back in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Cassidy Buckley led off with a double and quickly came around to score on Danielle Payton's single, cutting the Express lead to 2-1. After a hit-by-pitch, Elayna Lohkamp reached on a dropped fly ball, scoring Payton to tie the game at two.
 
Ocean County later loaded the bases in the inning and tacked on four more on Sarah Weeman's three-run single and Buckley's RBI single, taking a 6-2 lead after one.
 
The Express scratched out a run in the top of the second as Jasmeilyn Garcia walked, and scored on a pair of passed balls, cutting the Vikings' lead to 6-3.
 
But the Vikings extended their lead to 7-3 with a run in the bottom of the second on Lohkamp's RBI groundout.
 
And after the Express left the bases loaded in the top of third, Ocean County added three runs in the bottom of the third and five in the bottom of the fourth to take a 15-3 lead.
Hailey Dries (8-10) retired the side in the top of the fifth to finish off the 15-3, run-rule victory for the Vikings. Baez (3-8) took the loss for Monroe.
 
Both Baez and Garcia tallied extra-base hits, with Garcia going 1-for-1 with a double, walk and run scored, while Baez went 1-for-2 with a double, walk and RBI.
 
GAME 2: OCEAN COUNTY 14, MONROE 0 (5)
Ocean County struck first with four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead.
 
After a scoreless second, the Vikings broke out with eight runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 14-0 lead, before Dries finished off the run-rule victory with a 1-2-3 top of the fifth.
 
Dries (9-10) earned the win for Ocean County, while Baez (3-9) took the loss for Monroe.
 
Raileni Amarante and Jesiuska Cabral each tallied a hit for the Express, going 1-for-2.
 
The Express will be back in action on Friday, April 19 when they travel to Newton, N.J. to take on the Sussex Community College Skylanders in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
