BRONX, N.Y., March 30, 2019 –Monroe Express baseball dropped a pair of games to the Suffolk County Community College Sharks on Saturday at Roberto Clemente State Park. The Express fell, 10-0, in a run-rule shortened five innings in game one, before falling 4-1 in game two. Following the doubleheader, the Express sit at 1-11 (0-4 Region XV) on the season, while the Sharks move to 9-4 (7-1 Region XV) on the year.
GAME 1: SUFFOLK COUNTY 10, MONROE 0 (5)
Bryan Diaz struck out two to strand a runner at third in the top of the first inning. But after the Express left a runner at second in the bottom of the frame, Suffolk took the lead in the top of the second.
David Heller led off the second inning with a single, but Diaz got the next two batters to fly out. However, a pair of walks loaded the bases, and the Sharks took a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch, as Heller scored from third. Another walk reloaded the bases for Suffolk County before the Sharks strung together five-straight hits to take an 8-0 lead.
And after the Express again went in order in the bottom of the second, SUNY Suffolk extended their lead in the top of the third, adding two runs on two hits to take a 10-0 lead.
Emanuel Veras picked up the first hit of the game for the Express in the bottom of the third, but Joseph Valentino held the Express to just two hits over five innings pitched as the Sharks picked up a 10-0, five-inning, run-rule victory.
Diaz (0-1) took the loss for the Express, while Valentino (3-0) earned the win for the Sharks.
Veras and
Jesus Tejada each went 1-for-2 at the plate to lead the way for the Express, while
Chris Dominguez and
Rafael Duran Perez combined to pitch 2.2 innings of scoreless, no-hit baseball out of the bullpen.
GAME 2: SUFFOLK COUNTY 4, MONROE 1
After
Jason Veras worked a 1-2-3 top of the first inning, the Express got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning. Back-to-back singles from
A.J. Torres and
Jesus Tejada put runners at the corners with one out. Tejada stole second, and Torres came home on an errant throw to give Monroe a 1-0 lead.
Suffolk County answered with two runs in the top of the second to take the lead. Christopher Amato led off the second with a single, stole second, moved to third on Jacob Ford's groundout and scored on David Heller's grounder to tie the game at one. Heller reached on an error and stole second, before Nolan DeMelfi's RBI single gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead.
However, Veras stranded runners at second and third, getting Peter Baratta to fly out to left and Corey Tingo to groundout to keep Suffolk's lead at just one run.
Andrew Fenton extended the Sharks' lead in the top of the third with a solo shot to right, making it a 3-1 Suffolk advantage.
In the top of the fourth, DeMefi reached out an error, later scoring on Tingo's sacrifice fly to extend the Sharks' lead to 4-1.
Both teams went scoreless in the fifth, before the Express loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth. Torres led off with a single,
Bianyor Germosen followed with a walk, and
Emanuel Veras loaded the bases with a single to center. But
Juan Jorge grounded into a double play to end the scoring threat, and send the Express to the seventh down 4-1.
Three straight walks loaded the bases for the Sharks in the top of the seventh, but
Hafel Payano left them loaded, getting three straight outs to keep the deficit at 4-1.
And while the Express again loaded the bases in the top of the seventh against Suffolk on a pair of walks and a single, Suffolk escaped with the victory as Ryan Dunbar got Torres to ground into another double play.
Veras (1-3) took the loss for the Express, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits, walking two and striking out three over 5.0 innings pitched. Tyler Schmid (2-1) earned the win for Suffolk County, while Dunbar (1) picked up the save.
Nicanor Marte and Torres each led the Express at the plate with two hits. Marte went 2-for-4 with a double, while Torres went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
Payano pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, walking three and striking out two.
The Express will look to bounce back on Sunday, March 31 when they travel to Iselin, N.J. to wrap up the month of March with a doubleheader against Middlesex County College beginning at 1 p.m.
