ISELIN, N.J., March 31, 2019 – Monroe Express baseball dropped a pair of road contests in a non-conference doubleheader at Middlesex County College on Saturday. Following the two matchups, the Express fall to 1-14, while the Blue Colts move to 12-5.
GAME 1: MIDDLESEX COUNTY 21, MONROE 0 (5)
The Blue Colts quickly surged ahead of the Express, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first and two in the bottom of the second to take a 9-0 lead.
In the top of the third,
Juan Jorge picked up the first hit of the game for the Express, putting runners at first and third, but
Jesus Tejada struck out to end Monroe's scoring threat.
Middlesex County added seven more runs in the bottom of the third, and five in the bottom of the fourth, to extend their lead to 21-0, before Chris Michael pitched a 1-2-3 top of the fifth to finish off the five-inning, run-rule shortened victory.
Brian Espaillat (0-1) took the loss for Monroe, while Michael (3-0) earned the win for the Blue Colts.
GAME 2: MIDDLESEX COUNTY 28, MONROE 1 (5)
After the Express went in order in the top of the first, the Blue Colts again jumped out to an early lead, scoring 16 runs on eight hits and four errors in the bottom of the first.
Middlesex County extended their lead with six runs in the bottom of the second before the Express got on the scoreboard in the top of the third.
Anthony Gonzalez Jr. reached out a dropped third strike and advanced to third on a fielding error before scoring on Torres' RBI single to cut the Blue Colts' lead to 22-1.
But Middlesex County came right back in the bottom of the third, answering with six runs on four hits to extend their lead to 28-1.
Monroe went in order in the top of the fourth, and managed one hit in the top of the fifth, as the Blue Colts picked up another five-inning, run-rule shortened victory.
Luis Nieves (0-1) took the loss for the Express, while Bryan Camelo (2-0) picked up the win for Middlesex County.
Torres led the Express at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a stolen base and an RBI.
The Express will be back in action on Monday, April 1 when they host the College of Mount Saint Vincent JV at 3 p.m. at Roberto Clemente State Park in the Bronx, N.Y.
