Monroe Express Baseball Drops Intra-Campus Matchup against Monroe Mustangs JV

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., March 15, 2019 – The Monroe College Express baseball team fell to the Monroe College Mustangs JV in an intra-campus matchup on Friday at Dick Caswell Field, 17-9, in a run-rule shortened eight innings.

The Mustangs took an early lead, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded, Eric Diaz gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead with an RBI single, before Forrest Ruiz's sacrifice fly made it 2-0. Jordy Batista's double brought two more home, and the Express trailed, 4-0, after one.

Jesus Hilario led off the top of the second with a walk, advanced to second on A.J. Torres' single and scored on Miguel Reicino's RBI single, cutting the Mustangs' lead to 4-1.

But the Mustangs came right back and added four more runs in the bottom of the frame. After back-to-back hits to lead off the inning, Diaz extended the Mustangs lead to 6-1 with a two-run single. The Express made a pitching change, but the Mustangs scored two more runs on a pair of balks to take an 8-1 lead after two innings of play.

After a scoreless third, the Express responded with a big inning in the top of fourth. Bianyor Germosen's one-out single gave the Express a baserunner, before Torres and Estarlin Marte drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Reicino drew the third-straight walk to bring in a run, before Harold Valdez scored Marte and Torres to cut the Mustangs' lead to 8-4.

Reicino stole home to make it an 8-5 ballgame, before Valdez scored on a wild pitch, and the Express headed to the bottom of the fourth down by two.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jaylen Kelly and Carlos Aranda strung a pair of triples together to extend the Mustangs' lead back to three.

The Mustangs added four more in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead back to seven. Back-to-back doubles from Kelly and Batista brought home three runs, before a bases loaded hit-by-pitch later in the inning made it a 13-6 lead.

Both teams' bats went quietly in the sixth, before the Express struck back for two in the top of the seventh. Esteban Perez's one-out double put a runner in scoring position for Jesus Tejada, who brought the run home with an RBI single. Back-to-back hit-by-pitches loaded the bases for the Express, before Andry Sanchez scratched out another run with a based-loaded walk, cutting the Mustangs' lead to 13-8.

And though Tejada brought home another run in the top of the seventh, the Mustangs scored two in the bottom of the seventh, and two more in the bottom of the eighth to pick up a 17-9 run-rule victory.

Rafael Duran Perez (0-1) took the loss for the Express, while Manielvic Diplan (1-0) earned the win for the Mustangs JV. With the win, the Mustangs JV moves to 1-4, while the Express drop to 0-2.
