BRONX, N.Y., February 26, 2019 – The Monroe Express men's basketball team came from behind to defeat the No. 3-seeded Hostos Community College Caimans on Tuesday in the NJCAA Div. III Region XV Quarterfinals, 83-80. With the win, the No. 6-seeded Express earned their first-ever playoff victory, and advance to the Region XV Semifinals on Saturday, March 2.
After a back-and-forth first half, the Express trailed by four, 47-43, at the break. However, Monroe rallied, outscoring the Caimans, 40-33, in the second half to upset No. 3-seeded Hostos, 83-80.
Gian Batista tallied a team-high 20 points and 12 rebounds, for his sixth double-double of the year.
Ghetty Dimitri Allui added 17 points on 5-for-10 shooting, and 7-of-11 from the free throw line, while
Moussa Sanogo and
Khalik Johnson scored 15 and 13 points each, respectively.
Christopher Davis also scored in double-figures for the Express with 10 points, falling two rebounds shy of a double-double with eight boards.
The Express shot 45.1 percent from the floor, while holding the Caimans to just 34.6 percent, and 15.4 percent from three.
With the win, the Express move to 16-13, while the Caimans drop to 16-14 on the year.
The Express will be back in action on Saturday, March 2 when they travel to BMCC Gymnasium in New York, N.Y. to take on the No. 2-seed, the Nassau Community College Lions, at 5 p.m. in the Region XV Semifinals.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 29 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has nine varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
