Three Players Post Double-Doubles to Lead Express Women’s Basketball Past Westchester, 69-59

Valhalla, N.Y., December 17, 2019 – The Monroe College Express women's basketball program earned their third straight victory on Tuesday night, downing Westchester Community College on the road, 69-59. Three players finished with double-doubles in the win.
 
With the win, the Express improve to 8-5 overall, extending their best start in program history.
 
Sophomore forward Monae Laing had a career-high performance for the Express, finishing with her third double-double of the season. She finished with 18 points and 17 rebounds. Freshman Barbara Valentin tallied her third double-double of the season, with 18 points and 11 rebounds, along with five assists. Freshman Quanisha Griffin collected her second double-double, adding 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, four steals.
 
Freshman Imoni Beauvais scored eight points and assists while rookie Desteny Arzu had six points and eight rebounds.
 
The Express scored back-to-back baskets to start out the game to take an early lead. Westchester answer with five answered points to take a one-point lead with 8:10 to go. Both teams traded four lead changes throughout the rest of the quarter, as Vikings ended the period with a 16-15 lead.
 
The Express used a 17-6 scoring run to open the second quarter, jumping out to 10-point lead (32-22) with 3:33 remaining in the half. Westchester closed out the half on a 7-0 run to cut Monroe's lead to three (32-29) heading into halftime.
 
Monroe put together another scoring run to start off the third quarter, building up an 11-point lead (44-33). The Express led 46-38 after the third frame.
 
Monroe scored five unanswered points to kick off the fourth quarter, taking a 13-point lead 30 seconds into the frame. Westchester responded back, using a 10-0 run to cut their deficit to three (51-48) with 7:22 left. The Express closed out the game outscoring the Vikings 19-11 to seal the win.
 
The Express held the Vikings to 33.3 percent shooting in the contest. Monroe outrebounded Westchester 54-39 and had 16 second-chance points, while holding the Vikings to just seven.
 
The Express women's basketball program closes out the calendar year on Thursday, Dec. 19 on the road against Cecil College in North East, Maryland
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
