Monroe Express Women’s Basketball Opens 2019-20 Season with Dominating Win Over Anne Arundel, 85-52

ARNOLD, MD, November 1, 2019 – The Monroe College Express women's basketball team opened the 2019-20 season with a dominating 85-52 victory over Anne Arundel Community College on Friday evening.

Freshman Quanisha Griffin led the Express with a game-high 17 points, seven assists, four steals and two blocks. Sophomore Monae Laing posted a double-double, recording 13 points and 12 rebounds, along with three steals and two assists.
 
Barbara Valentin finished the evening with 14 points, six rebounds, and a game-high five steals. Sophomore Trowers scored nine points and grabbed 12 rebounds and a pair of blocks while Arianna Wilder added 11 points.
 
Desteny Arzu posted five points, six points, and two steals while Ashley Molina chipped in five points and two rebounds.
 
The Express did not trail in the game, opening the contest on an 18-7 run, outscoring the Riverhawks 22-11 in the first quarter. In the second frame, the Express held Anne Arundel to 28.57% shooting from the floor and took a 41-22 lead into the half.

Overall, Monroe held Anne Arundel to an 18-for-63 output from the field. The Express outrebounded the Riverhawks 54-50 and turned 29 Anne Arundel turnovers into 25 points.

Coming up next, the Express women's basketball program will take on the Monroe College Mustangs in intra-campus matchup on Thursday, Nov. 7. Tip-off is set 5:00 p.m. at the Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, N.Y.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
