Monroe Express Men’s Soccer Advances to the NJCAA Region XV Semifinals with 1-0 Win Over Westchester

VAHALLA, N.Y., OCTOBER 19, 2019 – The fifth-seeded Monroe College Express men's soccer team defeated the No.3 seed Westchester Community College Vikings, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the 2019 NJCAA Region XV Championship Tournament. The victory marks the first postseason victory in program history.

Freshman Emerson Guevara scored the game-winning goal for Monroe in the 83rd minute of the match. Classmate Jean Woobens Zamy earned the assist on the score after threading a picture-perfect cross into the box that allowed Guevara to finish.

Westchester narrowly outshot Monroe in the match with a 12-10 edge but the Express held 5-4 shots on goal advantage 

Sophomore Fred Guillou played monstrous in goal for the Express, making four saves en route to his first career shutout. 

Guevara led Monroe with four shots in the game. Edwin Peralta, Momodu Touray, Elhadj Diallo, Walter Lacayo, Jean Woobens Zamy, and Edwin Zuniga Lopez all had one shot attempt.

The Monroe Express men's soccer team will advance next to the NJCAA Region XV semifinals on Saturday, Oct. 26. The time and opponent for the match are still to be announced. 

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
