BRONX, N.Y., OCTOBER 18, 2019 – The Monroe College Express men's soccer program begins postseason play on Saturday, Oct. 19 traveling to Westchester Community College for a 1 p.m. contest at Barrett Field in Valhalla, N.Y. The No. 5 seeded Express will take on the No. 3 Vikings in the quarterfinal round of the 2019 NJCAA Region XV DIII Men's Soccer Championship Tournament.
Looking at the Express
The Express enters postseason play with a 7-4-1 (6-3-1 Region XV) record. In their last meeting with Westchester, the Express defeated Vikings, 2-1, on Sept. 3.
Freshman Emerson Guevara enters postseason play with a team-high 12 goals and 28 points. Freshman Edwin Zuniga Lopez has also been dominate in the offensive zone this year, netting 11 goals. Momodu Touray has totaled seven makers and a team-high six assists while Jean Woobens Zamy has notched seven goals on the season.
Second-year goalkeeper Fred Guillou has anchored the Express defense this season, making 42 saves in net.
Scouting Westchester
The Vikings went 10-3 overall and 7-3 in Region XV play action this year. Tuane Tapper heads into the postseason leading the team with 13 goals and 29 points. Goalkeeper Guilherme Griza has led the Vikings in goal this year, coming up with 69 saves.
The winner of Saturday contest advances to play in the NJCAA Region XV semifinals on Saturday, Oct. 26.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
