Monroe Express Women’s Soccer Earns First Victory in Overtime Win over BMCC, 5-4

NEW YORK, N.Y., October 1, 2019 – The Monroe College Express women's soccer team earned their first victory of the season on Tuesday, defeating Region XV opponent Borough of Manhattan Community College in a thrilling 5-4 overtime victory.
 
BMCC got the scoring started in the seventh minute, as Lis Velasquez netted the first goal of the match for the panthers.
 
The Express leveled the score with a goal of their own at the 14:59 mark when Fatoumata Sanneh buried in a shot for her first goal of the season.
 
A pair of goals later in the half (24:14 & 26:08) helped the BMCC build up a 3-1 lead.
 
A feed pass from Julia Hermoso helped sophomore Ilda Limon put away a shot in the 34th minute, cutting BMCC's lead down to one goal, 3-2.
 
The Panther were able to extend their lead before the half, as Cindy Daza scored BMCC's fourth goal of the half.
 
Entering halftime, BMCC held a 4-2 lead and outshot the Express 14-7.
 
Down 4-2 in the second half, the Ramatoulaye Diallo ended the scoring drought for Monroe, chipping in her first goal of the season in the 63rd minute to cut the Panther's advantage to one score, 4-3. In the 68th minute, Limon buried the equalizer for the Express off an assist from Diallo to send to match into overtime.
 
The Express continued their momentum into the overtime period as Diallo netted the game-winner just 23 seconds into the period, lifting the Express to their first victory of the season.
 
Goalkeeper Myrna Gregorie earned her first win of the season, collecting three saves in net.
 
Up next, the Express return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 against Kingsborough Community College.
 
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
