Monroe Express Women’s Basketball Opens 2019 with 81-61 win over Kingsborough

BROOKLYN, N.Y., January 5, 2019 – Monroe Express women's basketball picked up an 81-61 win over the Kingsborough Community College Wave on Saturday to open the New Year with a Region XV victory. With the win, the Express move to 6-9 (5-3 Region XV) on the season, while the Wave drops to 1-11 (1-7 Region XV).
 
The Express jumped out to an early 23-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, taking a 16-point, 37-23, lead into the halftime break.
 
Monroe continued their run in the third quarter, outscoring the Wave by five, before pulling away in the fourth quarter for the 20-point, 81-61 victory.
 
Five Express players tallied double-figures, led by Aida Barry's team-high 14 points. Barry added nine rebounds while Julie Trowers recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and a team-high 17 rebounds.
 
Maryam Camara joined Barry and Trowers in double-figures with 12 points, while Tatyana Forde and Ariana Jones added 13 and 10 points, respectively, off the bench.
 
The Express will look to make it two-straight when they return home to the Monroe Athletic Complex on Tuesday, Jan. 8 to take on Queensborough Community College at 6 p.m.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
