BRONX, N.Y., September 27, 2018 – Monroe Express women's volleyball fell to the Rockland Community College Hawks in straight-sets on Sophomore Night at Roberto Clemente State Park, dropping to 1-8 (1-7 Region XV) on the season.
The Hawks quickly took the lead in set one as Rockland rattled off 10-straight points off Anjali Sebastian's serve. The Express got on the board on a kill by
Jessica Gonzalez, but the early lead would prove to be too much, and Rockland took the first set 25-12.
The second-set proved to be competitive, with six ties and three lead changes. But with score tied at 11, the Hawks scored nine-in-a-row to take a 20-11 advantage, and eventually take set two, 25-12.
The Hawks took the third set by the same score as well, 25-12, to pick up a three-set victory.
Julie Trowers led the way for the Express with five kills, an ace and a block, while
Dennyfer Hernandez added nine digs and three kills.
Rachel Arias tallied a team-high 12 kills, adding five digs to her stat line.
After a weekend off, the Express hit the road on Thursday, Oct. 4 to take on Westchester Community College at 7 p.m. in Valhalla, N.Y.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
