NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., September 22, 2018 –
Kevin Gomez Reyes broke a 2-2 tie in the 83rd minute and Monroe Express men's soccer won their third-in-a-row, topping Queensborough Community College on Saturday at Flowers Park.
Just 10 minutes into the game,
Ryan Smart got the Express on the scoreboard, scoring his third goal of the season off an assist from
Keshane Bedward to take a 1-0 lead.
A little over 15 minutes later,
Elhadj Diallo made it 2-0 in favor of the Express, tapping the ball in off a header from
Mamadou Diombera for his second goal of the year.
But Queensborough's Francisco Corral curled a deep free kick off the crossbar and into the back of the net at the 30-minute mark, to cut Monroe's lead to 2-1.
The Express went into halftime up by a goal, but the Tigers quickly found the equalizer just over minutes into the back of the net, off the foot of Jesus Rios.
Neither team could get much going for the next 25 minutes or so, as multiple players picked up yellow cards. But just minutes after subbing in,
Kevin Gomez Reyes found himself with the ball in front of a wide open net off a pass from Diombera, and scored the go-ahead goal to give the Express a 3-2 lead.
Queensborough would press over the final eight minutes of play, but the Monroe defense held strong and the Express took home a 3-2 victory.
With the win, the Express move to 4-2 (4-1 Region XV) on the season, while the Tigers drop to 3-2.
Diombera led the Express with three shots and two assists, while
Fred Guillou, in his first start in goal, allowed two goals and made three saves.
The Express will try to make it four-straight when they hit the road to take on Rockland Community College on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. in Suffern, N.Y.
