Monroe Express Baseball Drops Home Finale to Mount Saint Vincent JV

BRONX, N.Y., April 30, 2018 – A five-run sixth inning proved to be too much to overcome, as Monroe Express baseball dropped their final home game of the season, 16-7, to the College of Mount Saint Vincent JV on Monday at Roberto Clemente State Park.

The Dolphins got things started in the top of the first, tagging Express starter Jeffrey Cristo with two unearned runs in the top of the first. Mount Saint Vincent JV would add three more in the second and one more in the third, all unearned, before the Express got going in the bottom of the inning.

Bryan Guzman led off the bottom of the third with a walk, giving Monroe their first baserunner of the game. After Julian Ovalles-Garcia advanced Guzman to second with a groundout, Alvin Vasquez picked up the Express' first hit of the game, a single to center, putting runners on second and third. Gorge Garcia followed with an RBI double, putting a run on the board, before Edwin Santiago reached on a throwing error, scoring two and cutting the lead to 6-3.

After Cristo worked a scoreless fourth, the Express tacked on another run in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded, Ovalles-Garcia scored on a wild pitch, but the Express left three on in the inning, and headed to the fifth down two.

On a throwing error and two-run single, Mount Saint Vincent JV extended their lead to five in the top of the fifth, but the Express came back with three in the bottom of the inning.

On three-straight two-out walks, Monroe loaded the bases, before all three runners scored on an errant pickoff attempt, again cutting the Dolphins' lead to just two.

But with five-runs in the top of the sixth, Mount Saint Vincent JV pulled away, while Robert Modica held the Express scoreless for three innings, to keep the Dolphins out in front, 14-7.

Mount Saint Vincent JV added two more in the top of the ninth, and John Anthony Pichardo worked a scoreless bottom of the ninth, to give Mount Saint Vincent JV a 16-7 victory.

Cristo (0-4) pitched 4.0 innings for the Express, allowing six runs, all unearned, on six hits, but took the loss for Monroe. Modica earned the win for the Dolphins, who move to 2-2-1 on the season, while the Express drop to 1-26.

Vasquez led the Express at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Garcia went 1-for-3 with a double, walk, run scored and RBI.
