Monroe Express Men’s Basketball Hits Century Mark, Tops Essex County, 100-71

NEWARK, N.J, February 1, 2018 – Double-doubles from Steven Hernandez and Andre Lane led the way, as Monroe Express men's basketball topped the century mark for the first time in program history, defeating Essex County College, 100-71.
 
The Express stormed out to an early lead and took a 47-29 lead into the halftime break, before pulling away in the second half to take home a 100-71 win, outscoring the Wolverines, 53-42 in the second half.
 
Louis Florimon led the Express with 17 points, who shot just under 50 percent from the floor at 49.4 percent, and 36.4 percent from beyond the arc.
 
Gian Batista also tallied double figures with 16, with Hernandez and Lane each recorded their first double-double of the season. Hernandez tallied a season-high 16 points and 19 rebounds, while Lane scored 12 points to go along with 11 boards, both season-highs as well.
 
Batista fell two rebounds shy of a double-double recording eight, while Jessy Jimenez, who scored nine points, fell a point and two rebounds shy of a double-double as well.
 
The Express are back in action when they return home to the Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, N.Y. to take on Dutchess Community College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of Monroe's Bronx campus has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning with their inaugural seasons in the fall of 2017.
