Monroe Express Men’s Basketball Rolls to Victory over OSL

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., December 29, 2018 – With all five starters finishing with double-digit points, the Monroe College Express men's basketball team rolled to an 83-62 victory over Our Saviour Lutheran (OSL) Saturday afternoon at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Express improve to 7-6 on the season with the win.
 
The Express grabbed an early advantage over the Falcons, going up 13-7 with 13:10 on the clock. The tables soon turned in favor of the visitors, as OSL scored 10 of the next 12 points to grab a 17-15 edge.
 
The two teams traded the lead back-and-forth until a 10-0 run for the Falcons gave them a 32-24 advantage with 4:15 left in the half. The Express then quickly closed the gap with eight straight points. With the game tied at 34-34, Gian Batista sank a tough layup, leaving the Express up, 36-34, heading into the break.
 
Christopher Davis led all scorers with 12 points at the break, adding a team-high seven rebounds through 20 minutes. Batista added another 10 points and led the team with five assists at the half.
 
The Express kept the lead early on in the second half, but OSL remained close at 48-47 with 13:19 on the clock. Monroe then went on a 13-0 run, taking a comfortable 61-47 advantage over the Falcons. The lead reached 20 points when Christopher Davis capped off a 6-0 run with a layup, leaving Monroe up, 75-55, with just 3:47 to play. The Express kept their distance the rest of the way, hanging on to win by 21.
 
Davis led the floor with 22 points, adding nine rebounds in the Express' impressive victory. Batista was right behind him, netting 21 points to go with eight boards and a team-high seven assists. Tyhj Peterson added 11 points, while Dashawn Hines completed a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Khalik Johnson's 10 points meant all five of the Express' starters finished in double figures on Saturday.
 
The Express get back to work on Saturday, Jan. 5, when they visit Kingsborough Community College for a Region XV matchup in Brooklyn. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
