BRONX, N.Y., November 6, 2018 – With four players scoring in double-figures, Monroe Express men's basketball topped the Bronx Community College Broncos, 86-78, on Tuesday at Alumni Gymnasium to open the 2018-19 season with a victory.
After a slow start, leading to an early Bronx lead, the Express closed the gap and tied things up on
Tyhj Peterson's layup with 17:35 remaining the first half. Five lead changes followed, as the Express and Broncos went back-and-forth throughout the half.
Arturo Sealy's three doubled the Express' lead midway through the first half, and from there, the Express slowly pulled ahead by double-digits. The Express maintained their lead the rest of the way, extending it to as much as 14, before closing the half with a 10-point, 49-39 lead.
The Express and Broncos traded buckets for much of the second half, as Monroe held onto their double-digit lead, before Bronx put together one last run.
Down 74-64, the Broncos cut the deficit to just two on a 9-1 run, but the Express responded by with run of their own, bringing the lead back out to nine, 83-74, on two free throws from
Dashawn Hines with 1:41 remaining.
Bronx cut the deficit to seven, but they'd get no closer, as the Express made their free throws down the stretch to pick up an 86-78 victory.
Ghetty Dimitri Allui led the Express with 20 points and seven rebounds, while
Gian Batista added 18 points, four rebounds and six assists.
Dashawn Hines recorded his first-career double-double with 13 points and 11 boards, while Sealy scored 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting.
The Express shot 47.1 percent from the field, and out-rebounded the Broncos, 44-38.
The Express are back in action on Thursday, Nov. 8 when they visit Orange County Community College in Middletown, N.Y. at 7 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
