NEW YORK, N.Y., November 29, 2018 – Led by a pair of double-doubles, Monroe Express women's basketball won their second-straight road game, defeating the Borough of Manhattan Community College Panthers, 61-34 on Thursday.
After a slow start to open the first quarter, the Express took the lead and never relinquished it. The Express led, 16-5, at the end of the first quarter, and though the Panthers held tight with Monroe in the second quarter, the Express headed into halftime with a 12-point lead.
The Express roared out of halftime with a 21-point third quarter, outscoring BMCC by 11 to extend their lead to double-digits, 49-26, heading into the fourth.
Monroe again outscored the Panthers, 12-8, in the fourth quarter to pull away with a 61-34 victory.
With the win, the Express move to 4-7 (3-2 Region XV) on the season, while the Panthers drop to 1-6 (0-4 Region XV).
Julie Trowers led the Express with 24 points, adding 16 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season, while
Arianna Johnson tallied 12 points and 11 boards for her first double-double.
Maryam Camara led the way defensively with 17 rebounds, falling just shy of a double-double with nine points. The Express outscored the Panthers, 42-16, in the paint, and tallied 18 second chance points.
The Express will look to make it three-straight when they travel to Garden City, N.Y. to take on Nassau Community College at 6 p.m. on Thurday, Dec. 6.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
